Bosque Farms has a rural feel, with pastures, horse property, and irrigation ditches lined by cottonwoods and Siberian elms. Those big trees often stand over barns, fences, corrals, and power lines rather than a tidy front lawn, so a failed limb can hurt livestock or cut service as easily as it can damage a roof. Many grew up on flood irrigation, and a change in watering or a dry year can leave a tall crown with less support below than it had a decade ago.
Working around that takes planning. An arborist looks at where a large limb would land, how close the tree sits to a ditch bank or utility line, and whether the trunk shows decay, before choosing between reduction pruning and removal. When a lender, insurer, or neighbor needs it, we provide written tree risk assessments using TRAQ methodology, and we carry the insurance that matters. Access through pasture gates and around livestock is worked out before the day of the job.
Russian olive and saltcedar are invasive in the middle Rio Grande valley, and both spread readily along ditches and fence lines, crowding out native cottonwood and willow and forming dense, thorny thickets. Cutting them without treating the stump usually brings them back as a cluster of sprouts. Siberian elm seeds into the same edges, and elm leaf beetle and aphids leave the elms thin, brown, and sticky by midsummer, adding stress to trees already competing for water.
The large cottonwoods carry the biggest risk on most of these lots. As they age or lose water, cytospora canker and wood boring beetles move into dying limbs, and those limbs can come down in a spring windstorm or a monsoon downburst. On the alkaline valley soil, honeylocust and other planted shade trees can also show iron chlorosis. An expert arborist checks the crown, the trunk, and the root flare of a big tree before deciding how much of it can safely stay.
